Absolutely loved this piece, Vicky! Not only does it speak to the international traveller in you and me, but to your passion to see where the similarities lie.
I don't think I can ever watch Beauty and the Beast without thinking of you!
Haha thank you Karena! Beauty and the Beast never looked the same again after I had my little realization. Makes me wonder what else am I not seeing in the classics!

Love this. As a kid I remember asking that same question about colors. How do I know your yellow is my yellow, or red, etc. Of course, everyone thought it was obvious, or pointed out that we know the physics of light and wavelengths, etc.
Thanks for diving deeper into this - yet another reason to seek out multiple perspectives and experience multiple cultures and languages.
Re: "you have to refer to a stranger as a ‘beautiful girl’ or a ‘handsome guy’ in order to get their attention."
This is so interesting! I am Cantonese-Chinese and I wonder if it's my ABC cultural gap, or maybe my own ish, but I always thought it was belittling to be called 'beautiful girl'.
I love and can relate to this: "I’ve had to update my beauty standards to keep up with the daily social banter. Not only do I need to see beauty in everyone, I need to see it in myself in order to answer to the casual ‘hey beautiful girl’ greeting everyone throws around."
Love love love your description of how the cross-pollination of different cultures affected your perception! I have intense memories of Victoria, BC being the most colourfully vivid place I had ever been when I visited with my boyfriend. When is the Victoria insta filter coming out, I wonder? Hehe
I enjoyed your piece, Vicky! You gave me some good insights and interesting facts about different cultures.
I am still curious what YOU mean by Intersectional Thinking, because it seems to differ from my definition (or at least interpretation) of the word.
Thank you Henk!! Working on defining the phrase now. I’m curious what your definition is
I loved this ! The bit about seeing color differently was so fascinating ! Definitely putting this in my notes !
I was mind blown when this popped up in Google haha!

"To me, Sydney had a permanent Instagram filter that accentuated everything with a splash of glistening gold."
OMG I agree with this. Everything in Sydney looked more bright, vibrant & glamorous.
"Is this why Instagram filters are named after cities?"
WOW, What a good connection!
