Absolutely loved this piece, Vicky! Not only does it speak to the international traveller in you and me, but to your passion to see where the similarities lie.
I don't think I can ever watch Beauty and the Beast without thinking of you!
Re: "you have to refer to a stranger as a ‘beautiful girl’ or a ‘handsome guy’ in order to get their attention."
This is so interesting! I am Cantonese-Chinese and I wonder if it's my ABC cultural gap, or maybe my own ish, but I always thought it was belittling to be called 'beautiful girl'.
I love and can relate to this: "I’ve had to update my beauty standards to keep up with the daily social banter. Not only do I need to see beauty in everyone, I need to see it in myself in order to answer to the casual ‘hey beautiful girl’ greeting everyone throws around."
Love love love your description of how the cross-pollination of different cultures affected your perception! I have intense memories of Victoria, BC being the most colourfully vivid place I had ever been when I visited with my boyfriend. When is the Victoria insta filter coming out, I wonder? Hehe
I enjoyed your piece, Vicky! You gave me some good insights and interesting facts about different cultures.
I am still curious what YOU mean by Intersectional Thinking, because it seems to differ from my definition (or at least interpretation) of the word.
I loved this ! The bit about seeing color differently was so fascinating ! Definitely putting this in my notes !

"To me, Sydney had a permanent Instagram filter that accentuated everything with a splash of glistening gold."
OMG I agree with this. Everything in Sydney looked more bright, vibrant & glamorous.
